APA President Affirms Patients’ Right to Help for Unwanted Homosexuality

Former Homosexuals Call Upon the APA to Advance True Diversity

August 25, 2006

Orlando, FL- The largest outreach to those affected by unwanted same-sex attraction is calling on the American Psychological Association (APA) to continue dialogue regarding help for patients in conflict with homosexuality. Despite the APA’s lack of recognition for former homosexuals as well its’ pro-gay political positions, APA President Gerald P. Koocher affirmed a patients’ right to help at a Town Hall Meeting at the organization’s annual convention in New Orleans. Koocher stated, “APA has no conflict with psychologists who help those distressed by unwanted homosexual attraction.” This comes as encouraging news to Exodus International who joined with several national organizations to protest the APA at their annual convention. More than fifty former homosexuals protested outside the event and respectfully greeted attendees with signs such as “Change is Possible,” “APA, We Need Your Support,” and “Diversity Includes Us.”  In recent years, the APA has spoken out about many political topics such as abortion, gay marriage and Zionism, but has resisted discussion with members who help patients desiring change in homosexuality. Ironically, a handout at the convention specifically mentioned the “corrosive effects of the socio-political ideologies” and “liberal biases” in the APA and characterized the organization as “a politically correct profession, with crowd control by the thought police.” Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, protested at the event and said, “This recognition of an individual’s autonomy and right to self-determination is a positive step for the APA. There are thousands across the country who are living in conflict with unwanted same-sex attraction and desire the help of skilled professionals. They have, instead, been marginalized for their personal beliefs and faith traditions. We hope the APA will consider these clients and initiate inclusive principles that affirm real diversity.”
Founded in 1976, Exodus International is the world’s largest outreach to individuals affected by unwanted same-sex attraction. With over 135 member ministries across North America, Exodus offers hope and help to the more than 400,000 people who contact the ministry each year.
