Evangelical Organization Welcomes Dialogue on Homosexuality at National Conference in Irvine
June 21, 2007
Orlando, FL- Over a thousand men, women, students, pastors, counselors and leaders from around the world will gather on the campus of Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. on June 26 through July 1 to celebrate freedom from homosexuality at an annual conference sponsored by Exodus International. Now in its 32nd year, Exodus International is the world's largest evangelical outreach to those affected by unwanted homosexuality. The organization welcomed news that local groups are protesting the conference by planning its own event saying that Exodus is grateful to add its voice to the community and nationwide discussion on this issue.
Nationally recognized speakers such as Christian recording artist and television talk show host Sheila Walsh, former NFL linebacker Dr. Ken "Hutch" Hutcherson as well as experts in the field of gender and sexuality such Joe Dallas, author of The Gay Gospel and Mike Haley, author, speaker and manager of Focus on the Family's Community Impact Outreach division, will present. The event also features over 50 workshops on a variety of issues related to homosexuality and a one-day seminar for married couples dealing with a spouse's unwanted same-sex attraction.
Alan Chambers, a former homosexual and President of Exodus International, said, "Our conference centers around the truth, hope, and freedom many of us have found through Jesus Christ. Anyone who has undergone the life-changing process of leaving homosexuality behind will tell you that it is not an easy one. However, for thousands of us, the journey has been well worth it and has resulted in lives that have been transformed and characterized by the mercy and compassion of Jesus Christ." Chambers as well as many others will share their personal stories at the conference.
Chambers responded to the news that local groups are planning to protest the Exodus event by holding a conference of its own, "Dialogue on this issue only benefits the community and the culture at large. It is a topic worth discussing and I am happy to share my experience as a part of a much-needed exchange of thoughts on this issue."
