Thousands of Students Gather for Day of Truth
April 14, 2009
Orlando, FL- Nearly 5,000 students will
gather on campuses nationwide today to celebrate the annual Day of Truth. The Alliance Defense Fund first
launched the event five years ago to offer all students an opportunity to openly
voice their views about sexuality in contrast to the Day of Silence. Since then, more than 13,000
students in all 50 states have participated in the Day of Truth and the organization has handled
several cases involving threats to student rights.
This year, the
Alliance Defense Fund and Exodus International have teamed up
to equip students to compassionately share their views about faith and sexuality
with peers who may personally struggle with this issue.
Scott Davis who
directs Exodus International's outreach to young people, Exodus Youth, says the organization
is seeing a dramatic increase in the amount of youth turning to Exodus for help.
"More and more young people are finding that the one-sided message they are
hearing about sexuality isn't answering their questions. The Day of Truth is a powerful opportunity for
them to connect with fellow students who can offer real hope and answers about
tough life issues."
ADF senior legal counsel Mike Johnson added, "Day of Truth students have the same
constitutional right to express their viewpoint as any other student.
Unfortunately, despite using buzzwords like 'tolerance' and 'diversity,' many
schools have censored students who want to peacefully express a Christian
viewpoint.
"Allowing the communication of one viewpoint and censoring
others is not only intolerant, but unconstitutional," said Johnson. "ADF will
defend Day of Truth students who have
their free speech suppressed in public schools."
