New Analysis Confirms Ministry Trends Related to
Men Struggling with Same-Sex Attraction
June 4, 2009
Orlando, FL- Multiple studies in
new report released by Focus on the Family shows that gay-identified males
experience sexual abuse as children at much higher rates than do heterosexual
men. Exodus International, the world's largest Christian outreach to those
dealing with unwanted same-sex attraction, says this newly released report, Childhood Sexual Abuse and Male
Homosexuality, verifies what the organization has seen for years and
provides a unique opportunity for ministry.
"This analysis is an
affirmation of a trend many of us in the counseling profession and those in
Christian ministry have seen for a long time," said Dr. Marc Dillworth,
counselor and Director of the Exodus Professional Counselor
Network. "It points to deeper wounds that an overwhelming amount of men who
struggle with unwanted same-sex attraction face. It also provides a tremendous
opportunity for the evangelical church to demonstrate Christ-like compassion to
those who bear the scars of abuse."
Dr. Dillworth, who has more than 30
years of experience in the counseling field and oversees a network of counselors
who assist men and women dealing with same gender attraction, says there is hope
and help available. "Our aim is to empower men to move towards healing from the
all-too-common tragedy of abuse so that they can accomplish their own goals. For
many, that includes living a life that reflects the Christian faith and we are a
resource for those pursuing this path."
